Surgical Treatment for Morbid Obesity

Seung Ho Choi

Department of Surgery, Gangnam Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine

Recently, the number of obese patients have increased in Asia including Korea, and bariatirc (weight loss) surgery is emerged as an important treatment for morbidly obese patients.
The search for the weight loss surgery started in 1952 by Victor Henriksson. A lot of innovative procedures with malabsorption and/or restriction techniques was creasted.
Developed modifications of these original procedures have led to the evolution of modern bariatric surgery. Roux-en Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, biliopancreatic diversion, sleeve gastrectomy are currently used modalities of bariatric surgery.
Bariatric surgery is considered to be more effective in causing weight loss compared to non surgical treatments and it is recognized as the sole method for establishing ontinuous weight loss.
